Fourth Sophos Representative Elected to the Board of the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO)

Onur Komili Joins AMTSO Board After Serving on the AMTSO Standards Working Group

Sophos, a global leader in network and endpoint security today announced that the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO) has elected Onur Komili, Third Party Test Manager at Sophos, to its Board of Directors. AMTSO is an international non-profit association that focuses on addressing the global need for improvement in the objectivity, quality, and relevance of anti-malware testing methodologies. Onur is the fourth Sophos representative to serve on the Board of AMTSO since it was founded in 2008.

“Independent and rigorous testing is essential to helping customers make informed decisions about the effectiveness of security solutions,” commented Joe Levy, CTO at Sophos. “The recently published AMTSO Testing Protocol Standard is a big step forward in driving responsibility, collaboration, and transparency to everyone conducting, participating or commissioning product tests. Onur represented Sophos on the AMTSO Standards Working Group that developed the new standard and we have committed to adopting the standards in every test Sophos commissions. As a founding member we are proud have Onur accepted to the Board of AMTSO.”

Levy continued, “Vendors can make any wild claim about the effectiveness of their software, or the ineffectiveness of competitors, which is why we take independent testing so seriously. When done properly it levels the playing field and creates trust across the industry. Compliance with AMTSO standards will be a factor in where Sophos engages with third-party test organizations, and we will encourage customers and partners to regard AMTSO compliant tests as more valid than others. If a test isn’t compliant with AMTSO Standards, customers should be asking why.”

Onur joined Sophos in 2006 as a Malware Threat Researcher specializing in web attacks within the SophosLabs research facility in Vancouver before taking management of Sophos engagement with all third party test organizations in 2014.

“Onur Komili played an active role in developing and refining the AMTSO Testing Protocol Standard and we are now very pleased to welcome Onur to our Board of Directors,” said John Hawes, chief operating officer for AMTSO. “Sophos has been a strong supporter of AMTSO for ten years and we look forward to continuing the relationship to build a more meaningful and effective environment in which customers can better assess products and vendors can work with testers to improve protection.”

Sophos is one of the original founding members of AMTSO, which was established in 2008 to improve business conditions related to the development, use, testing, and rating of anti-malware products and solutions. AMTSO now has more than 50 member companies across the security industry and is open to academics, reviewers, publications, testers, and vendors, subject to guidelines determined by AMTSO.
